EMEEN is thrilled to welcome Caitlin as our Student Ambassador. Her recent achievement as the winner of the gradIreland Female Undergraduate of the Year Award 2023 sponsored by Diageo showcases her exceptional qualities. This prestigious award recognizes Caitlin as a curious, self-driven, self-motivated, and team-spirited individual who possesses a remarkable ability to turn ideas into action. Caitlin is enthusiastic about inspiring ethnic minorities students across Northern Ireland and other key stakeholders about the importance of education and keeping high ambitions for themselves.
Caitlin's background reflects her diverse experiences and passions. Born in Northern Ireland with a Chinese-Malaysian heritage, she has always been interested in problem-solving and creativity, which naturally drew her towards STEM subjects. Alongside her academic pursuits, Caitlin has a profound passion for music, playing both the piano and clarinet.
Caitlin's educational journey has been remarkable so far. After completing her GCSEs and A-levels at the Wallace High School, she embarked on a Product Design Engineering (with a year in industry) program at Queen's University. Currently in her fourth year, Caitlin intends to return to Queen's University in September to complete her fifth and final year. Her passion for engineering lies in utilizing her skills to enhance the quality of life for under-represented groups, such as the elderly and individuals with disabilities.
Caitlin's commitment to making a difference is evident through her remarkable projects and engagements. For instance, she designed an alarm system during her GCSE Technology and Design project to aid the elderly living alone and at risk of falling. Currently, she is participating in a 12-week Mitacs Globalink Research Internship, collaborating with Polytechnique Montréal to develop a rehabilitation exoskeleton for children with neuromotor impairments. Additionally, Caitlin is actively involved in the QUB Future Leaders program in Boston, where she collaborates with a team to enhance the education system at Queen's University.
Besides her studies, Caitlin devotes her time to community engagement as a STEM ambassador volunteer. She also volunteers at weekly events for international students, fostering inclusivity and cultural exchange. Her dedication to serve as a course representative during her first and second years at university which highlights her commitment to student support and leadership.
Caitlin's journey has been influenced by inspiring individuals and organizations. Naomi McGregor, the founder, and CEO of Movetru, has been a role model and mentor to Caitlin since their meeting during her first year of university. Additionally, Caitlin gained valuable experience at Bloc Blinds, a window blinds company in Magherafelt, during her placement year. She worked with interdisciplinary teams, witnessing first-hand the innovation and growth fostered by the local SME company.
We would also like to acknowledge Queen's University, particularly the Go Global Opportunities facilitated by the Careers, Employability, and Skills service. Their support has enabled Caitlin to embark on transformative journeys to Boston and Canada, broadening her horizons and enhancing her global perspective.
With Caitlin's exemplary achievements, diverse background, and unwavering commitment to education and empowerment, we are delighted to have her on board as EMEEN's Student Ambassador. Together, we will strive to promote the crucial message of education's impact on employment and entrepreneurship for ethnic minorities in Northern Ireland. Caitlin's passion, leadership, and dedication will undoubtedly make a significant difference in the lives of many. EMEEN wishes her all the best.
