Dr. Kanwarjit Singh Panesar, a revered surgeon, community leader, and man of deep spiritual conviction, passed away on 15 May 2025 at the age of 84. His legacy is woven into the fabric of Derry/Londonderry, the city he made his home and served with unwavering dedication.
Born in Dosanjh Kalan, Punjab, and raised in Nairobi, Dr. Panesar studied medicine in Amritsar before arriving in Derry/Londonderry in 1976 during the height of the Troubles. His arrival marked the beginning of nearly five decades of transformative medical and civic service. Despite the unrest, he saw only people in need—and responded with compassion, skill, and tireless commitment.
Dr. Panesar played a central role in shaping Altnagelvin Hospital and later co-founded the North West Independent Clinic, now Kingsbridge Hospital. He was known as a "surgical giant," respected for his brilliance, humility, and human touch. His courageous response during the Omagh bombing and the COVID-19 crisis underscored his devotion to healing and humanity.
Beyond medicine, he was a pillar of faith and cultural identity. In 1995, he helped establish the Gurdwara in Derry, providing spiritual solace and community for Northern Ireland’s Sikh population. Through the Sikh principle of sewa (selfless service), he led with heart, honouring both his roots and the city he adopted.
In tribute to his enduring bond with Derry/Londonderry, his ashes will be scattered in the River Foyle.
At EMEEN, we honour Dr. Panesar as an inspiration to all ethnic minority professionals in NI. His life exemplifies the profound impact of integration, public service, and leadership. We remain committed to upholding the values he lived by—service, inclusion, and empowerment for all.
